INSPIRATION FOR KISSES
After the adoption of my daughter, Cami, from Vietnam in 1998, I was inspired to write IF KISSES WERE COLORS . This “mother's love poem” expresses my boundless love for both my children, to whom it is dedicated.
Dial Books for Young Readers, Inc. searched for just the right artist to illustrate my words. Renowned British illustrator, Alison Jay, uses a unique style of crackled glaze folk art to give the text a distinctive air, at once whimsical and sophisticated.
A PERFECT GIFT
IF KISSES WERE COLORS is a perfect gift for a special child (for any day or a holiday). It's a great new baby or shower present. And this mother's love poem also makes a wonderful Mother's Day or Valentine's Day gift.

“Newcomer Janet Lawler’s charming verse expresses a mother’s love for her baby, comparing kisses to raindrops, pebbles, glowing comets and other wonders of nature…This affectionate volume will induce a contented feeling as surely as it will inspire loving kisses. All ages.”
Publishers Weekly, 12/9/02
“The logic of love transforms the world here. Every “if” is followed by an implied “then” that shows the way love changes everything…And the menagerie of inhabitants – animals in clothing – makes the world additionally charming, with elephants in bathing suits and pigs in cable knits. This book brings a world of love to the lap-reading crowd.”
“Move over ‘Goodnight Moon;’ make room on the shelf for ‘If Kisses Were Colors’” Dora Kubek, Milford Weekly, June 6, 2003
