Today is Marine Mammal Rescue Day! Speaking of marine mammals, it seems a good time to share the cover of my upcoming picture book WALRUS SONG.
Timothy Basil Ering (illustrator of Kate DiCamillo’s Tale of Despereaux) has done an incredible job depicting Walrus and sharing his busy Arctic day of feeding, breeding, socializing, and vocalizing.
I hope fans, friends, and curious new readers will meet Walrus and learn fascinating facts about his species when WALRUS SONG publishes this fall. Tim’s gorgeous art makes readers feel that they are right there in frigid waters and on crowded ice floes with Walrus as he makes his noisy way!
And, just in case you are wondering, walrus calves are fed and nurtured by their mothers for about two years after birth. From time to time, orphans have been rescued and successfully raised by trained staff of marine animal rehabilitation organizations. Take a peek at two calves rescued a few years back by the Alaska SeaLife Center.
WALRUS SONG will be released by Candlewick Press on November 2, 2021.
